We don’t often do it, but sometimes it’s great to toot your own horn. That being said, we are very proud to announce that last night at Canada’s Magazine Awards, Descant and R. Johnson received the Gold Prize for Poetry for Johnson’s piece quietus. You can find this, as well as two of his other poems Islander and Land scape in DESCANT 133: Bibliomania, back orders of which are still available for purchase.
So from all of us here at Descant, a big congrats to R. Johnson for winning the $1000 grand prize!

A big congratulations goes out to Don McKay, the British Columbian poet who was awarded with the much lauded Griffin Poetry Prize last night for his eleventh book of poetry Slip/Strike. Long time Descant readers will remember McKay’s poem “Another theory of dusk”, which was published in Descant 62: Male Desire 1.
Along with the prestigeous award, McKay was granted $50,000. He has previously been awarded two Governor-General’s Literacy Award for Poetry.
McKay shared the award with international winner Charles Wright, who was honoured for his work, Tramp in Flames.

Booked! Three Days Between the Covers
- A brand new literary festival starting Friday June 8 to Sunday June 10, aimed at book-lovers of all stripes. So whether its chick-lit, horror, politics or pop-culture, be sure not to miss this fun-filled event with something for everyone!
- Currently tickets are still available for the Gala Tribute to Steven King on Friday June 8, which will feature the one and only Steven King, making his very first public appearance in Canada. Also attending the event is Margaret Atwood, and George Strombolopolous of CBC’s The Hour will emcee.
The Scream in High Park
- Don’t miss out on the 16th Annual Scream in High Park, running from July 3-July 9. Events include discussions, art viewings and readings, culminating on July 9 for the mainstage event in High Park presenting readings from various authors including Descant’s very own blogger Zoe Whittall!
