Many artists in Ontario are unaware of the information and services available to them. To remedy this, the Ontario government recently created a website to provide media, performing and visual artists, as well as writers, with information about a range of programs and services specific to their needs.
The new website – www.ontarioartist.ca – includes important links such as:
- sources of funding
- professional development opportunities
- legal assistance
- how to market work
So check it out, and spread the word to other Ontario artists!
You might think that accountancy and poetry don’t mix, but then you’d be terribly mistaken. Descant’s very favourite accountant Fred Gaysek also doubles as an eloquent poet, and is celebrating his literary talents at a poetry reading at St. Andrew by-the-lake, Toronto Island. Premiering his new work, Gaysek will be the voice in a music and poetry collaboration with New York jazz cellist Eric Friedlander.
The performance will take place on Friday July, 20. Doors open at 7:00pm, and tickets are $15. The Centre Island Ferry departs the city at 6:30 and 7:00pm.
You can also read Gaysek’s poetry collection “The Young Man” online at the Coachouse Books website.

The Descant crew would like to send out a congratulations to Balint Zsako, who contributed the cover art and his portfolio “Love Stories” to Descant 136: A Trompe L’Oeil Calender, for his recent achievement. Zsako’s art now graces the cover of the July 15th issue of the very prestigious New York Times Magazine, and accompanies Peggy Orenstein’s article “Your Gamete, Myself.”
Zsako’s drawing practice is represented by Spin Gallery, and his photography by Lee Ka-Sing Gallery (Toronto). His artwork can also be seen at the Dehuman touring art exhibition, which shows about 50 of Zsako’s work.
If you would like a copy of Descant 136 with Zsako’s work, issues are still available. Please visit www.descant.ca/subscribe to order.
Descant is proud to announce that Jonathan Butler, former Descant Co-Editor, will be launching his new novel Return of the Native at Brass Taps Pizza Pub, located at 934 College Street in Toronto, Ontario. The launch will be held on Friday, July 20 and will run from 6:30-8:30pm.
So if you happen to be in Toronto that weekend, stop by and support some great literary talent!
