Kent Monkman is the next speaker in the Toronto School of Art’s Guest Artists Lecture Series this coming Wednesday. DESCANT featured Monkman’s work this past year in D146: Immanence/Transcendence. He is a remarkable Canadian Cree artist who works in multiple mediums ranging from film and paint to performance and installation. Solo exhibitions of his work have appeared across Canada in museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto, and he has participated in group exhibitions including The American West, at Compton Verney, in Warwickshire, England.
Monkman is also known for his site specific performances in such places as The Royal Ontario Museum and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. He created super 8 versions of these performances and titled them “Colonial Art Space Interventions.” His short films and videos have won distinguished awards and have been screened at numerous national and international film festivals. Several museums possess public and private collections of his work, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.
