The NOW HEAR THIS! office is really buzzing as we approach the February 22nd
start date of the 2010 edition of S.W.A.T.! We are pleased to be collaborating with
the Toronto Catholic District School Board for the fourth year of our flagship
program which will be running from the week of February 22nd until the week of
May 3rd this year.
We are excited to announce our fantastic lineup of writers for S.W.A.T. 2010.
Returning to the program after success in previous years are Devon Code, Desi
Di Nardo, Colin Frizzell, Larry Frolick, Rebecca Rosenblum, Julia Tausch and
Aaron Tucker. Joining them this year for the first time will be Elisabeth de Mariaffi,
Adrienne Gruber, Nic Labriola, Angela Szczepaniak, and Natalie Zina Walschots.
These twelve talented writers will each be leading workshops in one of the twelve TCDSB host-schools. This year, the
participating schools are Dante Alighieri Academy, St. Joseph’s College, James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic Secondary
School, St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School, Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School, St. Basil-The-Great College, Bishop
Allen Academy, Madonna Catholic Secondary School, Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, Neil McNeil Catholic
Secondary School, Michael Power/ St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School and St. Mary Catholic Secondary School.

We’ve just launched our brand-spanking-new WRITE ON! Workshops which are an
opportunity for community groups, students and aspiring writers to connect with our
talented Writers-in-Residence. These single-session workshops are designed to
enhance creative activity, writing skills and critical thinking by bringing a
professional author into the classroom. Provided on a 1/2 day or full day basis, these
workshops are themed to the specific talents of our writers who comprise a diverse
roster of voices from Toronto’s arts and literary scene. For more information––
including a free brochure and how to order–– contact Jennifer de Visser.

March 2010 will mark the launch of The Barracuda, the anthology of writing produced
by the student participants of S.W.A.T. 2009. The anthology is currently undergoing its
final tweaks and edits and will be going to press in the next few weeks.
The Barracuda will launch with a big celebration of the great work of our 2009
S.W.A.T. students at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto. Invitations will be sent out at the
beginning of March — so keep an eye on your inbox for further news and
announcements!

Descant Magazine is pleased to invite you to the poetry event of the season.
