S.W.A.T. Reaches Its Halfway Point!

The winter 2010 edition of the Students, Writers And Teachers Creative Residencies Program is currently in the sixth of its ten weeks run at the Toronto Catholic District School Board ! The first five weeks seem to have flown by, but we are delighted with the writing that this year’s student participants have produced so far.

The over 1200 students have been sharing their work with their fellow writers and are just beginning to submit it for consideration to be published in next year’s anthology. We can’t wait to see all of their final products in May!

The Beautiful Barracuda Launch!

On March 31st NOW HEAR THIS! hosted a fabulous party at The Gardiner Museum in Toronto to celebrate the launch of our anthology of student writing, The Barracuda!

We were joined by more than 150 students, writers and teachers who have participated in the S.W.A.T. program as well as their families, friends ofNOW HEAR THIS! and members of Toronto’s literary community. The event was hosted by Katie Mercer and Rachel Hopwood (2009 and 2010S.W.A.T. Program Coordinators, respectively) and featured speeches by Charles Hain of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Teresa Paoli of theTCDSB and Karen Mulhallen of Descant Magazine. The audience was also treated to readings by writers-in-residence Desi Di Nardo and Colin Frizzell and four students whose work was published in The Barracuda: Micha el Rodrigues, Ofelia Scarcelli, Erick Thibeault Orsi and Carleen Veloso.

The Barracuda is now available for purchase at our web-store. It features some incredible young talents and is a perfect book for anyone interested in celebrating the success of these creative voices.

Would a WRITE ON! Workshop Be for You?

NOW HEAR THIS! offers single-session WRITE ON! Workshops which bring professional authors into classrooms and use creative writing exercises designed to enhance participants’ learning experiences. We’ve started the year with a blast, having already run a very successful workshop series in collaboration with Students for Barrier-free Access, a group at the University of Toronto and have more workshops coming up at high schools around the city. These workshops are designed to enhance creative activity, writing skills and critical thinking by bringing a professional author into the classroom. You still have a chance to order one or more for your community group, school or organization. Provided on a 1/2 day or full day basis, these workshops are themed to the specific talents of our Writers-in-Residence who comprise a diverse roster of voices from Toronto’s arts and literary scene.
