Date: August 6th 2010

    Student Publications:

Our latest anthology of student writing is now on sale—in stores! NHT! is thrilled that our beautiful Barracuda (which features writing by 2009's S.W.A.T. students) is now available in the same book and magazine outlets that sell our mother publication, Descant. Check out Rachel's blog post and images of The Barracuda on display in her neighbourhood Book City; head to the Descant website for a full list of stores that carry our work.

    S.W.A.T. Program:

NOW HEAR THIS! is pleased to announce the growth of its Students, Writers and Teachers program. In fall 2010, we'll place our authors in three schools across the city; in winter 2011, we'll take the program to twelve more. Young writers looking for inspiration should check out the Toronto Public Library's Word Out 2010 website. The program offers city youth reading recommendations and creative outlets, to tide you over until S.W.A.T. starts again.

    HEAR/HEAR Readings:

Our last HEAR/HEAR event was a smash success and we're really looking forward to the next! In June, we featured Angela Szczepaniak, Elisabeth de Mariaffi and Natalie Zina Walschots; Wednesday, August 11, we've got Devon Code, Colin Frizzell and Paul Vermeersch on the line up.

We're glad to have them—and we hope you'll join us for a mid-summer celebration of their talents.

HEAR/HEAR happens at the Free Times Cafe (320 College St). Doors open at 6:30pm; readings start at 7pm. As always, the event is free and all ages. We'll feature a raffle prize give away of books generously donated by This Ain't the Rosedale Library. In light of the store's recent closure, HEAR/HEAR # 8 will be dedicated to This Ain't — longtime supporter of Toronto's literary scene and valued sponsor of NHT!

    WRITE ON! Workshops:

NHT! continues to develop its single-session creative writing workshops. The program enjoyed real success in late 2009 and early 2010: Desi Di Nardo connected with participants from Literature for Life during our pilot workshop last fall. In spring and early summer of this year, Larry Frolick, Joseph Maviglia and Mark Ngui shared our "Life Writing", “The Song is a Poem” and “Graphic Novels” workshops with students and adult learners at Students for Barrier-Free Access (UofT), the Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy, and Senator O'Connor College. We look forward to collaborating further with Toronto’s schools and community organizations this fall. For more details on our program, check out the WRITE ON! website, or contact Hilary Fair, for a free program brochure.

    FAMILY and FRIENDS:

In July, Descant launched D149: Summer and Smoke—The Search for Values. Friends and supporters packed Bar Italia for an evening of readings, and a dynamic close to Descant’s 39th year.

Mark your calendars for the next: on October 6, we’ll celebrate the start of Descant’s 40th anniversary with the release of D150: Writers in Prison. Watch for details here
