Our thirteenth instalment of HEAR/HEAR has changed dates: our reading series is now taking place August 17th at 6:30 at The Supermarket (268 Augusta Ave). We apologize for any confusion and we hope to see you all there to celebrate the writers who contribute to our outreach programming.

As always we will be hosting a raffle, giving away books and exclusive NHT! t-shirts. So come out and support local artists and celebrate our 13th reading series.

		S.W.A.T. Out for Summer!

		It all happened so quickly, but alas, our Student, Writers and Teachers Residence for winter 2011 has come to a close. Over the ten-weeks, students put their writing skills to the test by exploring genres such as concrete poetry, haiku, sonnet, spoken word, journalism, short story, memoir and comics. We are so grateful to have a stellar band of writers facilitating English activities in high schools throughout the city. We are especially grateful to the Toronto Catholic District School Board who has partnered with us every step of the way. What a great semester! Can't wait to start it up again in September! 		Dromedary!

		D-D-D-Dromedary is our upcoming student anthology from the 2010-2011 school year. And man are we excited about it! Over 750 pieces have been submitted from Catholic high schools involved in the S.W.A.T program from eager young writers. Genres spanning from poetry, short fiction, essay, comic and drama are undergoing the first stages of editing by Rachel. So far she's come across some exciting work to include in the anthology due for publication next year. In the meanwhile, be sure to purchase our old friends The Armadillo, The Barracuda, and the newest creature to the NHT! family, The Capybara. Check in on the NOW HEAR THIS! blog for more updates about The Dromedary.


		Hear-Hear, WRITE ON! Style

		Mark your calendars for lucky number 13 HEAR/HEAR! Our bi-monthly reading series is NOW HEAR THIS!'s way of thanking our Writers-in-Residence for all the amazing work they do with youth. This HEAR/HEAR has a bit of a twist: with the overwhelming success of the WRITE ON! Workshops, we decided to dedicate this reading series to specific WRITE ON! Writers: individuals who have facilitated creative writing workshops in community centres and schools outside of the S.W.A.T. program. HEAR/HEAR 13 will feature: Nic Labriola Motion J Wyze All HEAR/HEAR Readings take place at The Supermarket (268 Augusta Ave) and start at 6:30pm sharp. See you there!



		WRITE ON Breaks out!

		NOW HEAR THIS! is exceptionally proud of all the flourishing WRITE ON! Workshops developing in community centres, libraries and organizations throughout Toronto. Between May and June, we've carried out 5 workshops to 3 amazing organizations: Spoken word artist, musician and radio personality J Wyze facilitated two creative writing workshops for members at Operation Springboard: Blue Jays Lodge, a youth justice residence. These workshops explored both poetry, hip hop and rap lyricism and encouraged participants to write their own words. A follow up to April's poetry workshop at Parkdale Drop-in Community Centre, Elisabeth de Mariaffi facilitated a creative "Where we're From" workshop, where members wrote poems about their various backgrounds. Bereaved Families Ontario: Toronto hosted a creative writing workshop facilitated by Jacob Scheier. The workshop, "Grief and Loss", explores techniques on writing about the loss of a loved one while understanding varying levels of grief. This emotional workshop gave members the skills and confidence to incorporate personal experiences into their own writing. If you are interested in hosting a WRITE ON! 		Introducing Writers' Circuit!

		Now that S.W.A.T. is on break for the summer, NOW HEAR THIS! has embarked on a new project, an online classroom for youth called: Writers' Circuit. This free, interactive forum is specifically designed for young writers to share their work and comment with their peers about writing. Facilitated by Nic Labriola, Writers' Circuit runs for 8 weeks during the summer and features writing prompts, detailed critiques by the Writer-in-Residence, interviews by professional writers, videos and podcasts about creative writing and other web-based content. Already, active and eager Writers' Circuiters are writing and critiquing each others' work in the first week of the program. 		The 40th and a Chariot?

		Descant Magazine's 40th Anniversary issue, Possible Worlds is on sale and available at your local bookstore and online. May-o-my! NOW HEAR THIS! is welcoming May's warm weather by cranking out some exciting programming. Here's a brief overview of what's happening at NHT!

		Spring into S.W.A.T.

		Our Writers-in-Residence are getting into the groove of all things S.W.A.T. as they continue to work alongside high school teachers and offer exciting creative writing exercises to students. But the students aren't the only ones doing the learning. S.W.A.T. writers, both first-year and seasoned residences, are gaining a lot of insight about working with youth and exploring literacy in the classroom. Joseph Maviglia will also be performing a show at Hugh's Room (2261 Dundas Street West) June 8th with jazz vocalists Kathleen Gorman and Laura Fernandez. 		Easy as ABC!

		NOW HEAR THIS! is exceptionally proud of our anthology collection: The Armadillo (2008), The Barracuda (2010) and our newest member The Capybara (2011). Each anthology showcases work from students across Toronto who participated in the S.W.A.T. program and man, do they have a lot to say. From short stories to poetry to memoirs and more, each book gets better and better. President of Descant Arts & Letters Foundation Karen Mullhallen has this to say about our latest anthology: "The Capybara is a living being, and it brings with it all the complexity and joy and power of the human imagination... May the alphabet of creatures continue to grow and proliferate." 		Hear-Hear Reading Series

		In April, HEAR/HEAR launched the first reading series of 2011. Writers Paul Carlucci, Emma Roberts and Jacob Scheier graced the stage with their words while Joseph Maviglia and special guest Liam Ward gave a spectacular musical performance. For photos and a podcast of the evening, be sure to check out hear-hear.ca and relive the magic. The twelfth HEAR/HEAR will take place June 15th featuring readings by Tanis Rideout, Ibi Kaslik and Devon Code. Also harmonica and vocalist Liam Ward will be returning to the stage. 		Awesome April Workshops!

		April has been a busy month for WRITE ON! Workshops as NOW HEAR THIS! brought three workshops to various organizations in Toronto. For National Poetry Month, Senator O'Connor College hosted Nic Labriola in an interactive "Poetry Month" Workshop. Musician and spoken word artist Motion facilitated a workshop through Operation Springboard: Blue Jay Lodge, a youth justice residence, exploring the poetry behind hip hop and rap lyrics. Our final poetry workshop in April took place at Parkdale Drop-in Community Centre and was facilitated by Desi Di Nardo. If you are interested in hosting a WRITE ON! 		40th Anniversary Launch!

		Descant Magazine invites you to their 40th Anniversary Launch, exploring Descant in past, present and future. This special occasion takes place June 29th at the Harbourfront Centre. The month of April is always exciting in the NOW HEAR THIS! office. Spring is warming up nicely and our programs have been blossoming in the past few weeks.

		Spring into S.W.A.T.

		S.W.A.T. is heating up as it reaches the mid-way mark and what better way to celebrate than by reading intimate details about our 2011 S.W.A.T Writers-in-Residents? We've recently featured an interview with Jacob Scheier, our writer at Madonna Catholic Secondary School and Paul Carlucci, our writer at Bishop Allen. Find out what they read as teenagers, what inspired them to become writers and other secrets they may have. Keep your eyes peeled for more interviews about our S.W.A.T. writers on our blog!


		Capybara Greatness!

		The Capybara launch was an utmost success! Not only did we show off the glamourous 160 page student anthology, filled with short stories, poems essays and colour illustrations, but we did so with style. No amount of snow could stop us from partying and the NOW HEAR THIS! office sincerely thanks every student, parent, teacher and fan who came out in the cold to celebrate this great book. 		April 13th, April 13th, April 13! Our first HEAR/HEAR Reading Series begins... you guessed it, on April 13th at our new location, The Supermarket (268 Augusta Ave). 		Comics at Rosedale High!

		WRITE ON! Workshops hosted a fantastic creative writing workshop this March in collaboration with Rosedale Heights School of the Arts called Graphic Novel: Beyond the Comic. Two Writer's Craft classes and two Alternative Visual Arts classes were instructed by WRITE ON! graphic novelist Marc Ngui for 6 days. During the workshop, students learned about the history of comics, its basic elements, how to draw simple characters' faces and bodies and how to blend words and pictures together to tell a story. 		Great Ghosts & Summer Sun

		This April Descant Magazine launched issue 152: Ghosts and the Uncanny at the George Brown House. The evening was elegant and eerie as contributors read their prose and poetry to a full house. 			S.W.A.T is Underway!

			The Students Writers and Teachers Residency program is in its third week and already the buzz is contagious. As always, the Toronto Catholic District School Board high schools have opened their doors and twelve of our S.W.A.T. writers are shaking up English classrooms across the GTA. 			Capybara Par-tay!

			Grab your marker and draw a huge circle around March 23rd because the third student anthology The Capybara is launching with a party of epic proportions. Join us for an evening of readings from our S.W.A.T. students and S.W.A.T writers as we celebrate The Capybara in all its glory. The party will take place at the Gardiner Museum (111 Queen's Park, 3rd floor Terrace Room) with the party starting at 6pm. Save the Date: The Capybara Launch (March 23)

Hello NOW HEAR THIS! Friends & Family,

Here at the office we’ve been busily preparing for our biggest event of the year and we hope that you can come out to support NOW HEAR THIS! and our programming.

The Capybara, our newest anthology of student writing, is launching with a blow-out party on Wednesday, March 23. This event celebrates the creativity and hard work of all the students in the S.W.A.T. program, but especially those published in The Capybara.

The anthology itself boasts the best writing by student participants from the 2009-10 school year's series of S.W.A.T. creative residencies—short stories, poems, memoirs and personal essays. The 65 students whose work is featured in The Capybara have found creative ways to express the modern youth perspective and stand up to those issues affecting teens every day. The Capybara also features cover art and a selection of illustrations interspersed throughout the book created by local talent Michael DeForge.

This event is free to attend and open to the public, so we hope you’ll join us in toasting to the continued success of the S.W.A.T. program and our fabulous student writers. Students and writers will be performing their work, discounted copies of The Capybara will be available for purchase and light refreshments will be served.

			Meet our S.W.A.T Writers!

			Big news from the NOW HEAR THIS! office! The Students Writers and Teachers Residency Program starts up again February 28! We are excited to be collaborating with the Toronto Catholic District School Board for the fifth year running. The S.W.A.T. program's main goal is to integrate professional writers into classrooms across Toronto to make reading and writing more exciting and fun! New S.W.A.T. means a new lineup of fantastic writers for 2011. 			Party Capybara Style!

			Prepare for a CAPYBARA takeover in Toronto with the launch of the third student anthology The Capybara! Our spectacular students from S.W.A.T. 2010 will have their very own writings featured in this wonderful anthology. After undergoing some last minute touches The Capybara is heading to print and hits the stores this spring! And what better way to announce our completed anthology than with a Capybara Launch Party? NOW HEAR THIS! invites you all to partake in the festivities March 23 where we will celebrate at the Gardiner Museum (111 Queen's Park). The party is from 6pm - 8pm. Keep your eyes, ears and snouts open for more details about the event of the year on our blog.


			Hear-hear.ca You Say?

			The HEAR/HEAR Reading Series is a bi-monthly reading held to feature our S.W.A.T. writers and thank them for all the work they do in the classroom and throughout the community. The hear-hear.ca website is a reflection of our reading series: a little nook in the cyberspace where NOW HEAR THIS! fans can relive moments from the evening. We showcase posters illustrated by the fabulous Michael DeForge and share candid photos of our writers performing their work with the public. The pièce de résistance are our podcasts, capturing the very words that make our writers so wonderful. Whether it be a piece deeply embedded in the writer's repertoire or a fresh new work that has never been shared with the public, we've got it all in these delectable podcasts to tide you over until the next HEAR/HEAR event being held on April 13th. 			WRITE ON! Workshops

			Looking for an exciting way to bring literacy into your school, organization or community centre? WRITE ON! Workshops offer single-session workshops designed to enhance creative activity, writing skills and critical thinking by bringing a professional author into the community. We provide 1/2 day, full day or week long workshops thematically design to highlight the specific talents of our WRITE ON! writers. 			Ghostly Spring Issue

			Descant is launching its exciting spring issue entitled Ghosts and The Uncanny. This eerie evening is taking place at the historical George Brown House (50 Baldwin St.) April 6 with doors opening at 7pm. By day, the George Brown House is the office of both Descant and NOW HEAR THIS!. By night, it's said to be the stomping grounds for 19th century publisher and politician George Brown who was shot and died in the building. Spooky! Check out the Descant website for more details.

Happy New Year! We're diving head first into 2011 at NOW HEAR THIS! with our new and exciting writing programs. January is an busy time in the office, so here's a quick look at all that's going on:
			Fresh S.W.A.T. in the Air!

			Our Students Writers and Teachers residency program is gearing up for it's winter semester this February. In the meanwhile, we're currently scouting out a fabulous and fresh line up of 2011 writers. Check our blog for updates as to who will be returning to the S.W.A.T. program and who is joining the team.


			Capybara Coming Close!

			The highly anticipated third anthology *The Capybara* is a collection of writing from students involved in the S.W.A.T. program from 2009 Winter semester and the 2010 fall semester. Our little Capybara is progressing nicely (check out the cover!) as all the pieces from the anthology are coming together. Another 4 syllabic animal to look out for in the year is *The Dromedary, again an anthology but this time featuring work from our S.W.A.T.* writers. For updates on our anthologies, be sure to check the NHT! blog . And don't forget about our old chums *The Armadillo* (2008) and *The Barracuda* (2010) available here.


			HEAR/HEAR: What a Year!
			If you haven't already heard, the HEAR/HEAR Reading Series was a success in 2010! We've got attention from one of Toronto's top websites blogTO on two occasions and we're hoping to be featured in more spaces throughout the blogosphere. Our bi-monthly reading series, featuring our NOW HEAR THIS! writers is set to start off in April 2011. In the meanwhile, check out our site hear-hear.ca where you'll find photos and podcasts of previous events. We've just update all of last year's readings including the memorable Holiday Party .


			WRITE ON! for 2011!

			Our WRITE ON! single session creative writing workshops — available to community centres, schools, "at-risk" organizations, and aspiring writers — will be running in 2011 across Toronto. Our talented NOW HEAR THIS! writers-in-residence offer theme-specific workshops designed to stimulate, encourage and enhance creative expression in a comfortable learning environment. This year we'll be launching a new workshop in addition to our current song-writing, memoir, graphic novel and media writing workshops. 			Two-in-One Show!

			Descant Magazine, our parent organization will be launching Descant 151: Winter Reader and Winston Collins Award ceremony in the same night, February 8. This double whammy of poetry, hosted at the Supermarket (268 Augusta Ave) promises to be a literary evening to remember. The event is free and doors open at 7:30 so be sure to mark your calendars!
