132:
The World of Barbara Gowdy
"The
production internship at Descant was a
great introduction to the industry: the cozy office environment
provided me with an overview of bringing an issue to print.
As the production editor, I tightened my copy editing and
proof reading skills, contributed creatively through a short
essay for the issue and with the designer, as well as dabbling
in permissions, publicity and event planning. Monthly editorial
meetings introduced me to the world of acquisitions, grants
and submissions as well as other members of Descant’s
team. This opportunity has given me insight into and enthusiasm
for the publishing process and has helped direct my future
goals."

Tales from the Great Dominion and its Territories
"Empowerment:
“Here you go,” is what they said, encouragingly,
as they handed me the reigns. They never took them away,
never told me how others had done it, or how I should do
it. Experience: Depending upon how much ambition
is milling around in your veins, you can make this experience
anything you like. You’ll work hard, but the lessons
learned will be worth the brow wipe. Atmosphere:
All those involved are driven by passion. Nothing else.
...So
move! Get your application in and bathe yourself in
literary goodness. "

Genies and Generations
"Descant
isn't only an award-winning magazine – it's a community
of writers, artists, thinkers, and dreamers. Joining the
Descant community has given me the opportunity
to engage with Toronto's vibrant literary scene in professionally
exciting and personally rewarding ways. Having worked in
publishing for a number of years now, I can say with confidence:
To intern is human; to Descant, divine."

Venice, Imagined: Fictions, Memories, Dreams, Reflections
"The
production editor internship is an opportunity to experience
that most pleasurable of shifts, from consumer to creator.
The role of the production editor is one that touches on
all aspects, every step, of the creation of this beautiful
magazine; it is a role you will be glad to have stepped
into and will be proud to have fulfilled. It’s also
a great time spent surrounded by fantastic people and working
with incredible writers — and I hear they now have
a coffee maker."
